Original U.S. Civil War Era Bronze “Sea Monster” Door Knocker with Mounting Fixture Named to Confederate Navy Captain James W. Cooke (1812-1869) French Ordnance near JacksboroOriginal Item: One of a Kind. This is a very impressive item, just as it was removed from a Civil War era front door. Measuring 9" overall, top to bottom, and very heavy (about 4lbs). This bronze door knocker came from the Portsmouth, Virginia home of Confederate Naval Captain James Wallace Cooke, and has a silver plaque on the mounting bushing that reads: CAP'T JAMES W. COOKE. Cooke was born in 1812 and joined the U. S. NAVY as a Midshipment at an
